Honigman is currently seeking a Trademark Staff Attorney for our Ann Arbor office who will utilize strong knowledge and understanding of various domestic and foreign trademark prosecution matters to coordinate and assist with U.S. and foreign trademark registration efforts. This position will be responsible for managing trademark portfolios, trademark clearance, US and foreign trademark prosecution, and US and foreign contentious matters. This includes multi-jurisdictional filing programs, constant communication with clients and foreign counsel concerning clearance, filing instructions, office actions, potential conflicts and similar prosecution matters. This position will use appropriate computer software applications proficiently to conduct and analyze preliminary searches, including on-line investigations, and assist with comprehensive searches and will assist with infringement and clearance investigations. In addition the position will handle all aspects of U.S. trademark prosecution, prepare Assignments of trademark registrations and applications and file same with USPTO and foreign offices. This positon will be depended on to quickly get up to speed on department processes and needs, as well as take initiative to follow-up and take necessary action.

Position Requirements:
• J.D. degree from an ABA-accredited institution
• Must be licensed Michigan attorney in good standing or have ability to waive into Michigan bar without examination;
• 4+ years of relevant experience in a Trademark prosecution, searching and enforcement;
• Proficient in Word, Excel, and an ability to quickly learn how to efficiently use other applications used by the department.
• Proficient in the use of the Internet for conducting research, including a strong knowledge of trademark clearance databases, as well as trademark investigations – online, by telephone and through investigations. Prefer experience with PATTSY (or an equivalent docketing software), Saegis, Lexis/Nexis, Westlaw, and similar research tools.
• Trademark search and clearance experience, both preliminary and comprehensive.
• On filing experience with the USPTO, WIPO and the US Copyright Office
• High level of communication skills requiring social sensitivity and in-depth knowledge of department procedures in order to communicate effectively with staff and management within and outside the department and external contacts, including clients, foreign associates and vendors.
• Ability to organize and prioritize numerous tasks and to complete them under significant time constraints.
• Ability to follow and convey instructions effectively with a high degree of courtesy and tact including ability to independently initiate follow-up.

Harness Dickey & Pierce, P.L.C., an intellectual property law firm based in Troy, Michigan, has a unique opportunity to place an attorney in-house at a subsidiary of a large Japanese corporation located in Nagoya, Japan, which specializes in international patent practice. Qualified candidates should be licensed to practice in a state, preferably be registered with the United States Patent Office and have 1-3 years patent prosecution experience; preference will be given to electrical and mechanical engineering candidates and/or candidates having some automotive engineering experience. Harness Dickey will provide 1-3 months training at its office in Troy, Michigan, after which time the candidate will be re-located to Nagoya, Japan. The corporation pays for moving expenses between the U.S. and Japan, and provides assistance with securing an apartment in Nagoya. Harness Dickey will assist in matters pertaining to obtaining the candidate’s work visa.

While in Japan, the candidate will be responsible for preparing, in accordance with US patent practice, English language translations of patent applications originally filed in the Japan Patent Office. An amount of patent drafting, including patent claims, will be necessary to supplement specifications of certain translations as invention improvements become known before filing outside of Japan. Additionally, the candidate will be responsible for coordinating handling, analyzing, and providing internal recommendations for strategy to respond to communications from foreign patent offices (such as Office Actions). The position is part of an established corporate patent department within the corporation.

The candidate’s commitment in Japan will be for a period of two years minimum with the Japanese corporation. Upon successful completion of the assignment in Japan, the candidate may have the opportunity to join Harness Dickey as an attorney upon obtaining the requisite state licensure. No Japanese language skills, nor prior work experience outside the United States, are required for this position. The candidate will have ample opportunity to vacation throughout the Far East, as well as to Australia, New Zealand and the South Pacific region. No work-related travel is anticipated.

Bejin Bieneman, PLC, is seeking a part-time to full-time patent searcher. We will train the right candidate; this is an excellent opportunity for an engineer to learn about patent law. Your job duties will include analyzing invention disclosures, working with a patent attorney to formulate a search strategy, and then searching for patent prior art using online databases. Other possible duties include invalidity searching and/or freedom-to-operate searching. Your minimum availability must be 25 hours per week. Compensation will be on an hourly basis.

The successful candidate must have an engineering degree; experience in automotive engineering is a plus. This position allows the opportunity to work from home after an initial training period with a requirement to be in the office half a day (or potentially less) once or twice a week.
